In 1817, Thomas Bond founded a pottery sanitary ware company in Armitage, Staffordshire. For 90 years the company traded as the ‘Armitage Sanitary Pottery Manufacturer’, until 1907 when it was incorporated as Armitage Ware Limited. As the UK’s premier manufacturer of sanitary ware it merged in 1969 with Shanks Holdings Limited. Shanks, was a Scottish sanitary ware company, founded in 1878 in Barrhead, Glasgow. The two became known as Armitage Shanks
In 1980 Armitage Shanks was purchased by Blue Circle Industries, and in February 1999 Blue Circle sold its bathroom division (consisting of Armitage Shanks and the Italian Ceramica Dolomite) to U.S. based American Standard Companies. By 2004 the company had 8 factories throughout the UK and is today the most recognised brand for commercial sanitary ware products
